Marvel’s Jessica Jones (NETFLIX)

She’s a super strong private eye who was once a super hero in the marvel universe.  She has a difficult past that comes to light when a super-villain who haunts her past comes back into her interesting life.  Also, in the series is Luke Cage, how gained his own spin-off series recently.

Krysten Ritter and David Tenant alone are worth the price of admission.  Their interplay is hard to describe without spoiling the series, but it’s well worth watching.

Silicon Valley (HBO)

This HBO comedy brought to us by Mike Judge (of King of the Hill, Office Space and Beavis and Butthead) has been on for 5 seasons and it follows the life of a young tech wunderkind as he navigates Silicon valley.  He has a hot new technology and a great supporting cast, but they keep getting into various misadventures.

Black Mirror (Netflix)

From the mind of Charlie Brooker, it’s a modern-day Twilight Zone about the dangers of our modern technology.  It’s an anthology series, in that each episode follows new characters in a new story, but sometimes there is interesting overlap.  The episodes are sometimes hit or miss, but the hits are incredible.

It was successful originally in England, but it crossed the pond after seeing success rebroadcast on Netflix.  Netflix has since bought the show and started to produce their own seasons.

It’s a great combination of sci-fi and anthology horror.

  1. BoJack Horseman (Netflix)

BoJack Horseman is a cartoon comedy on Netflix.  It’s set in a bizarre pseudo reality where humans and animals make up our society.  It sounds like a silly premise, but it works.  It centres around a formerly famous Horse-man, who has struggled with substance abuse, depression and decline.  It’s a dark portrayal of humanity, Hollywood and the demons of depression, but it’s also, at times quite light and silly.  It’s a strange brew, but for the most part it works.

The first season isn’t as good as the ensuing seasons, so it’s worth hanging on for season two.  It really finds its stride and this dark, black comedy is a must see on Netflix.  Perhaps the best show on Netflix.

Peaky Blinders (Netflix)

In the shadow of the horrors of World War I, is Thomas Shelby, an Irish Gypsy gang leader living in Birmingham in the 1920s.  He guides his gang with ruthlessness, but is also sympathetically troubled due to his past in the war.
