I don’t know what it is, but I’m a bit of a sucker for those feel-good, high-school type shows. From my younger days watching Ready or Not, Breaker High and even Sweet Valley High, to my current addiction to The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl and 90210, these series are some of my biggest TV guilty pleasures.
There’s a new one beginning this week that I think I’d like to sink my teeth into. It’s called My Life as Liz, and it stars a “former popular girl” who used to hang out with the “mean blonde bombshells” until a falling out with her clique made her re-examine her life.
It sort of sounds like the feel-goodness of the Lindsay Lohan flick Mean Girls, doesn’t it? And who would have thought, that movie is yet another one of my secret faves.
Liz Lee, the star of the series, hails from Texas, loves indie music and comic books, and a good rivalry with the popular “conformists” she feels “pollutes” her school. She trends towards the granola side, opting to sustain herself on a vegan diet while catering to a pet snake, and her hair has been more colours than she can even remember.
Sounds to me like a fun heroine.
The series, which premièred in the U.S. this past January, is like The Hills or Laguna Beach in the way it’s shot — a reality show with enhanced situations that make for good TV fodder.
In the opening episode, “Summer of Suck,” Liz is forced to deter from her plans of having a kick-ass senior year when she has to spend the last few days of her summer with one of the blonde, popular gals.
But what else is there to do in a small, conservative town when you’re a witty teenager with strong opinions and a TV show but cause controversy?
My Life as Liz debuts Monday, March 15, 10 p.m. ET, MTV and can be viewed online at MTV.com the next day.
