I don’t know what’s with me lately. I used to laugh at people who watched shows like The Real Housewives or The Hills because to me the whole genre seems overly frivolous; an excuse to put people on TV who rarely work for what they have. Spencer and Heidi Pratt instantly spring to mind.

But one day I found myself mesmerized by these Real Housewives people. I can’t explain why exactly, but in a way their dizzying spending habits and gossip sprees were suddenly fun to watch.

It started on a lazy Sunday mid-morning, when I was still nursing a headache from the night before but not yet feeling functional enough to put anything into my stomach other than some coffee and soy milk. Before I knew it I had watch three solid hours of Housewives debauchery, and I was hooked.

As a result, I now find myself tuning into Slice more and more for their weekend marathons, and I’ve even managed to hook my boyfriend, too. (Although, now that I think about it he might have been the one to hook me in the first place.) Regardless, one day as we were seeking some Housewives action, we found ourselves engrossed in an episode of The Millionaire Matchmaker instead.

The series revolves around Patti Stanger, a formidable woman with a flourishing matchmaking business for wealthy men and women. But at the heart of the company is more than a staff of matchmakers. Stanger and her team also help the suitors with shopping and date coaches, therapists or sometimes by choosing matches a little out of their comfort zone, but within the radius of their ideal person.

And some of these people are kooks, let me tell you. In the episode I watched a few weeks ago, Stanger was trying to help a recent divorcée figure out whether she was gay or straight, matching her with a plethora of men and women in the process.

To add stress to stress, in the third season Stanger not only deals with these various personalities, but plans a wedding of her own, too.

If you’ve heard of the show but never taken the dive, I’ve got the perfect opportunity for you. This Sunday, dabble in The Millionaire Matchmaker with an all-day Season 3 marathon from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET on Slice. Then you can let me know why the heck I’m suddenly all about these shows.
