I’ve never been a fang-girl. Sure, I watched Lost Boys back in the day, but that was more for my love of Kiefer Sutherland and the Coreys than anything else.

In the last few years, it’s been Moonlight this and Twilight that, and then True Blood came along and that was next best vampirey thing. Meh. I just didn’t get it.

It seemed like everyone here at TVGuide.ca was watching it. And raving about it. So I thought I would give it a whirl. I managed to get my hands on the first episode and watched a bit of it but it was bloody (obviously), graphic, and packed with lots of sex and violence, so considering I’m a network TV junkie and my favourite shows include Chuck and Big Bang and Lost, True Blood seemed way out of my league.

But since then, I’ve ventured into the cable realm (via On Demand) and my newest love is United States of Tara, despite my apprehension when it first debuted. So I thought, if I can give Tara a try, maybe I should try True Blood one more time.

And now I have the chance. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the show, so why not, right? Thanks to a Japanese scientist’s invention of synthetic blood, humans have been taken off the menu of blood-suckers. It might sound weird, but now that vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens, it seems like it would take an eerie turn but the story really centres on Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepath who works at as a waitress in a joint owned by a shapeshifter named Sam (Sam Trammell). But things get lovey-dovey when Sookie hits it off with Bill (Stephen Moyer), a 173-year-old vampire and the two embark on a romance. So when broken down like that, it sounds like more of a romantic drama than a horror flick, which I much prefer.

I’m slow to catch on to True Blood’s allure, but I think I’ve opened my mind enough to settle down and watch the first season and take a bite out of the Southern gothic tale. Chomp.

Season 1 of True Blood premières Sunday, March 14, 10 p.m. ET, Space.
