We’re almost there, people. Just hang tight for two more weeks — the end of America’s Got Talent is near.
It seems like the show has been airing since the beginning of the year. And while that may be a teensy exaggeration, Talent did return on June 1, which is like a lifetime ago.
But for such a loooooong lead-up to where we are now, it’s all going to end super-fast. Now that the Top 10 has been finalized — Michael Grasso, Fighting Gravity, Jeremy VanSchoonhoven, Jackie Evancho and Studio One Young Beast Society were the five selected to move on last night, joining Michael Grimm, Anna and Patryk, Prince Poppycock, Taylor Mathews and Christina and Ali — you’d think there’d be weeks more to go.
The way a season of Talent goes down has always baffled me. There are weeks and weeks of auditions, then quarter-finals, semifinals, Top 48s, Top 12s, wild card rounds, judges picks, and so on and so on and so on. So I wasn’t sure what happened once the Top 10 — the final 10 — was comprised. Would one act be eliminated a week? Two? None?
Turns out, after the Top 10 perform, the results show the night after will reveal the four acts who will move on to the final show. That means six (!) will be gone as of next week. Woo hoo!
For the most part, I like all the acts who’ve made the finals. But there are some who I just don’t see as a headlining show in Las Vegas. (I’m looking at you Christina and Ali, and Taylor Mathews). If I wanted to see dancing, I’d tune into So You Think You Can Dance Canada or America’s Best Dance Crew, so buh-bye Anna and Patryk and Studio One Young Beast Society (worst name ever, by the way).
So here are my picks for the finale, which may change after next week’s performance show: illusionist Michael Grasso, dance group (though I think that’s a poor description of them, but that’s what was on NBC’s site) Fighting Gravity, opera singer Prince Poppycock and singer-guitarist Michael Grimm. While I love stunt biker Jeremy, I just don’t think he or his act is made for Vegas.
I have a feeling Poppycock or Grimm will be out in favour of kid opera singer Jackie Evancho, but I just think she’s weird. Sure, she’s beyond talented, but the voice that comes out of her is that of a grown woman and that just freaks me out.
America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Citytv/NBC.
