What was it like losing your brother in the first week and having to go on without him?
John Crutchfield: It was a pretty emotional night. We’re really competitive, so going in and seeing that first challenge – the bikes – we were knew we could it. And we were in the house, everything was good. We lost almost the same amount of weight and we both felt that amount was good enough to keep us around. We were floored that our numbers weren’t good enough to stick around. I was upset that night, but I woke up the next day and got my head clear and I was pretty good. James’ rationale was sound.

They showed you in your workout practice last night. What got you into jiu jitsu?
JC: My brother and I were going to gym and it got to the point where I needed to do something that was fun and last forever. I’ve always been a fan of martial arts, and the trainers that I have a great. You get a much higher intensity of workout, the cardio is ridiculous, and at the same time you’re doing something that’s fun. That’s the key. I go to a gym at work and pretty much stick to elliptical machines, and I do a little bit of treadmill at home.

What have you changed at home regarding what you eat?
JC: Pretty much everything. Your taste buds change when you go to the ranch. Eating something salty or sweet is kind of like, “Whoa, this is crazy.” You almost can’t handle it. It’s overbearing. I don’t use table salt, using something other than butter, eating a lot of chicken, fish and vegetables. Even the desserts are sugar-free and fat-free, but they still taste really delicious.

What were your thoughts on Miggy, who had surgery and then came back and walked 11 miles?
JC: I thought it was scary. Miggy is a tough person, and it was brave of her to walk after having an emergency appendectomy. It was scary to me to see her in the gym, and she was on the elliptical going really fast, and it kinda got scary. The green team was a machine, and they had a fantastic work ethic. The second day she walked 17 miles and the third she walked 14. It was crazy.

How have you and your brother pushed each other?
JC: We don’t work out that often together because he’s in more of central Orlando and I’m on the outskirts. And he loves doing the traditional gym type stuff. We size each other up when we see each other once a week. We did do a weigh-in and I’m beating him by a little bit, but we try to keep it a secret from each other as much as we can.
