TVGuide.ca: What exactly did you do to your foot to break that bone?
Shelaina Anderson: I fractured my fifth metatarsal at the base. My foot turned in when I fell from a lift and you could hear the crack. I’m out for six weeks, basically.
TVG: Have you suffered from other dance injuries before?
SA: No, this is my first major injury. I’ve had a couple of accidents before, but nothing this bad.
TVG: How did your mom take the news of your injury?
SA: My mom was really, really devastated. She actually flew out here, along with my step-dad and my sister, to come watch the show this week, to watch me dance, but obviously I was unable to so she sat with me in the audience. She’s been there every step of the way for me, so it’s really helped.
TVG: How have you been enjoying Toronto — is it your first time in the city?
SA: The only other time I’ve been here is for finals week (in June), so what I’ve been able to experience, I’ve absolutely loved. We don’t have too much time off between rehearsals, but if I ever had an hour or two, I’d always run outside the apartment and go see what I could.
TVG: What did it mean to have Tre apologize for wanting you off the show before (when you auditioned for Season 2)?
SA: That meant everything to me. I really respect Tre and really value her opinion, and when she said that to me, it really meant a lot.
TVG: Do you plan on coming back next year and if so, there anything you’ll work on improving in the meantime?
SA: Definitely, I really hope to come back. When I get home, I need to go and get an MRI done and another X-ray to check on the status of my fracture, and see what kind of rehabilitation I need to do to get myself back into it. But I’m going to get back into teaching and go back to school (University of Alberta), and start training again to build more strength for next year.
TVG: What was the one thing you were really looking forward to doing as part of the Top 22 that you didn’t get a chance to do?
SA: Just performing. The first episode, the first performance show was especially hard for me. Just seeing everybody do the little walk out at the beginning [of the show] and do their duets — I wanted to do my duets so badly.
TVG: What do you think of the show airing back-to-back episodes in Season 2’s first week?
SA: Oh, I thought it was great! Bring it on, I think it should’ve been two weeks long, to be honest. [Laughs]
TVG: What surprised you the most about the competition?
SA: Just how much of a family everybody becomes so quickly. I’ve left in the first week, but I already feel so close to so many of the contestants and we’re going to be life-long friends.
TVG: In your bio on CTV’s website and I noticed that you love Tim Horton’s. What’s your typical order?
SA: My family and I are actually kind of obsessed with Tim Horton’s. When I used to dance throughout high school, we would always go to Tim Horton’s before going to the competition — it was almost like a good luck thing, I guess. We’d always order coffees, teas, doughnuts, blueberry muffins — the works.
TVG: How do you take your coffee?
SA: I actually don’t drink coffee myself, but I drink tea. I love their apple cinnamon tea, it’s my favourite.
