When Breaking Bad began, we were presented with a likeable Joe Schmoe high school teacher who was scraping by life with his pregnant wife and 16-year-old disabled son, until he found out he had severe lung cancer and went ape shit.
Now, as the series gears up for Season 3, there’s a different lead character than there used to be, and that’s thanks to Bryan Cranston’s award-winning transformation as Walt White over the past two years.
“I’m starting to accept the metamorphosis of my character,” the actor says. “That transition over time is one of the things that is the most compelling for this show: turn Mr. Chips into Scarface.”
When we pick up in Season 3, Walt has been kicked out of his house and is trying to lead a straight life so that he can get back in good with his suspecting wife.
“The entire construct that Walt was holding fast to is blown up,” promises Cranston. “They write themselves into an unbelievable corner and then fight and scratch to get out of it.”
Breaking Bad returns in March on AMC.
