Top Gear: U.S.
It’s finally happening. After myriad discussions, a handful of hosts and a fistful of production cost problems, Top Gear America is actually coming to a television near you. But if you’re a fan of the original British version, be prepared for disappointment.
It’s always hard to recreate fantastic hosts like Jeremy Clarkson, who is known for his dry wit and childish mannerisms for all things cars on the original series. On this History Channel reincarnate, Tanner Foust is the sole original host from the failed NBC pilot; replacing Adam Carolla and Eric Stomer are Adam Ferrera and Rutledge Wood.
“We looked for a long, long time to try and find people,” says executive producer John Hesling. “We initially thought about trying to fulfill the same kind of roles that the guys do in the U.K. show. But then realized it’s a pointless task.”
It’s not like they picked anyone without credentials. Foust is an award-winning stunt driver who has worked on films such as The Dukes of Hazzard and Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift; Wood is a roving reporter for NASCAR events; and Ferrera … well, he’s funny.
All three men are adamant about their love for American makes and models, casting an ignorant shadow on the imports that make the original so unique and fun to watch.
“The biggest thing about America is that our own — our automotive history and culture is specific to here,” says Wood. “But, you know, the scary part is with the exception of The Office, Dancing With the Stars, American Idol, there haven’t been a lot of successful shows stolen from the British concepts.”
Perhaps it should be pointed out that all three of those series air on major U.S. networks.
Top Gear airs on History Channel this fall. No Canadian broadcaster has announced airdates or times.
