The scandal of David Letterman, his extra-marital affairs and the extortion charges that surrounded them have climaxed with a guilty plea.
Robert Halderman has pled guilty to one count of attempted grand larceny in the second degree, reports TMZ.com.
He was sentenced to six months in prison, five years probation and 1,000 hours of community service.
"I have great remorse and sincerely apologize to David Letterman and Stephanie Birkitt. I attempted to extort $2 million from David Letterman," said Halderman in the courtroom.
Additionally, he called the extortion attempt "a thinly veiled threat."
Under the terms of the deal, Halderman will serve 500 hours of community service in New York and the rest in Connecticut.
In early October, Letterman revealed the extortion plot on-air, in an episode of The Late Show. He admitted he had sexual relationships with female employees, and that someone attempted to extort $2 million from him over the affairs.
Letterman said that he received a threat that told him to either pay the amount or news of the relationships would be made public.
In November, we reported that Law & Order was using the Letterman scandal as inspiration for an episode of the NBC drama.
