Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield has cancer, according to a statement from the series’ network, Starz. The 35-year-old star, who plays the titular role on the show, has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
According to the statement, the cancer was detected early and Whitfield will begin treatment immediately in New Zealand, where the series is filmed.
Production on the sophomore season of the show, which was set to begin this month, has been delayed in the meantime.
“I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me,” Whitfield said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy," said Chris Albrecht, president and CEO of Starz. "His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time."
Spartacus was one of the year’s most anticipated shows, and was renewed for a second season before the first even began. Some have criticized the series for being gratuitously bloody and sexual, without any solid storyline.
In Canada, the series currently airs on The Movie Network and Movie Central. The Season 1 finale is slated for April 19.
