For anyone who’s ever wanted their own TV programming, here’s your chance.
A western Michigan station has appeared on eBay at a mere $550,000, a sale which includes the licence and equipment of Channel 38 in the area, but not the broadcast tower.
Owner Bud Kelley originally listed the 24-hour WMKG-LP at $1 million, but according to The New York Times he’d be happy with half that — in cash.
“It’s a real station, not a toy,” he says. “It’s just retirement time for me.”
The 67-year-old has run the station since April 1990, and no longer wants the responsibility of keeping up with the pressures of the more popular programming, some of which includes live talk shows, outdoor sports programming and an interactive bingo show on Thursday nights.
Kelley plans to retire with his wife in Florida, but needed to get rid of the station first. eBay seemed like a logical choice. He told the publication serious offers have come, despite the “tire-kickers.”
The listing has since been removed from the eBay site.
