Raise your hand if you’re excited about the Smurfs movie. Yup, me too.
And here’s another reason to get you pumped. Glee star Jayma Mays is joining the live action/animated film version, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Mays will play the pregnant wife of Johan, played by Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother). This will be a reunion of sorts for the two actors, since NPH will guest-star in an upcoming episode of Glee.
Joining Mays is Hank Azaria, who will play Gargamel. While some reports have said Azaria, who provides many voices on The Simpsons, would only be heard in the Smurfs flick, Harris clarified Azaria’s role on his Twitter account.
“Hank Azaria will be PLAYING Gargamel for the Smurfs film, not just providing a voice. He’ll be live action. Perfect casting, can’t wait!”
Eighty-four-year-old voice actor Jonathan Winters, who voiced for the original show, has been cast as Papa Smurf, reports ugo.com. Meanwhile, Alan Cummings tells MTV News he will play Gutsy Smurf, whoever that is.
He adds that other cast members include Quentin Tarantino as Brainy Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, and Katy Perry as Smurfette.
The blue creatures, who are three apples high, were first created in 1958 by the Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford (also known as Peyo), then they were popularized in their own ‘80s cartoon.
The Smurfs is scheduled to hit the big screen in July 2011.
