AMC is invoking the executives over at Starz, it seems. Much like how Spartacus was renewed last year before it even aired, IAE Magazine broke the news on Monday that The Walking Dead has been picked up for a 13-episode second season, almost two full months before its Oct. 31 debut.

The first season, which is based on a monthly comic strip by Robert Kirkman, and is written, directed and produced by Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption), has an order of six episodes. A pilot episode hasn’t been screened by critics yet, but a trailer was unveiled at the July Comic-Con in San Diego to positive reviews, and is now gaining momentum online.

TNT, which renews shows based on ratings and not hype, also made a renewal yesterday. According to THR, Jason Lee’s Memphis Beat, a series about a Tennessee detective obsessed with Elvis, has also been renewed for a second season. Here in Canada, that series bows this fall on Super Channel.

As for next summer, it looks as though Thomas Jane will be pimping himself out again. HBO announced it has renewed Hung for a third season, supposedly based on the 2.525 million viewers the show nabbed Sunday night. But if you consider the five million plus viewers who tuned in before Hung to watch True Blood, and the 2.861 million viewers who watched Entourage immediately after, the ratings no longer seem that great.
