Living in a bustling Canadian city, Toronto or otherwise, means the following: summer construction causing massive traffic, people always rushing to make their very important appointments and the guarantee of a gay pride parade. Vancouver, Halifax, Montreal, Edmonton – no matter the city, gay pride will be celebrated with nothing less than grand majesty.

But that’s part of the beauty of wearing the title “Canadian.” We have the freedom to say what we like, believe in what we want, and live whatever lifestyle we choose. This is why I love the gay pride festivities. I may be straight, but to me gay pride means so much more than sexual orientation; it’s celebrating freedom of expression.

While I’m being covered in falling streamers, weaving through men in leather chaps and singing karaoke with a seven-foot man dressed in drag, I’m gleaming with pride. How sweet it is to live without boarders, social limitations or public scrutiny.

In clebration of Toronto's Gay Pride Week, and those taking place all across Canada this summer, I give you my list of reality TV’s GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) representatives. To all my favourite Dancing Queens, I’ll see you in the streets wearing way too much glitter and waving many a rainbow flag.

How do you celebrate gay pride? Let me know. oliveiraj@tvguide.ca

Janine has been a devoted critic of cheesy TV ever since her inaugural Paradise Hotel episode. Five years, long hours and a considerable lack of beauty sleep later, her passion has earned her a Rolodex of useless knowledge.

Tackling shows other professionals cringe over such as Flavor of Love, The Real World and Celebrity Fit Club, Guilty Pleasures’ subtle complexity deserves more than just a snap judgment. Janine’s unique talent to celebrate a worthy “trash-show” is a launch pad for fans of cheesy TV everywhere.
