Like a good novel, a great television show — live or recorded — often depends on the competency and flair of the actor, actress, host, anchor, VJ (the list goes on) to liven up the set with an array of unique characteristics that can light up the small screen. It is, after all, show business. But what is perhaps often unthought of when it comes to the entertainment world is the fact that our favourite television stars are, like us, working a job (albeit more glamourous than most).

Akin to that pesky retail gig you had as a teen — where fellow employees are there one minute and gone the next — show business can also be a fickle engagement, in so far as to ascertain why two ubiquitous (and cliché) universal industry truths have been contrived. The first? “Nothing is forever.” It’s living proof that in the span of a show’s existence, nothing has the guaranteed ability to go the distance — not a storyline, plot, character or star. And like any job, when a person’s time has run out, whether it be contractual or solely by choice, a replacement is sure to be waiting in the wings — thus confirming the second truth: “the show must go on.”
