Hi Amber, I’ve seen commercials on Showcase for Haven. It’s supposed to premiere July 12, but I don’t see it on Showcase’s schedule. Please tell me it will be airing in Canada! —Laurie
Amber: It will absolutely air on Showcase, no worries. In fact, Haven (which is based on the Stephen King novella The Colorado Kid) is a Canadian co-produced series shot in Halifax. The network debut is tonight (Monday, July 12) at 10 p.m. ET and if buzz is any indication, this show is going to be huge. Mind you, I haven’t screened it yet to make that call myself. If you want more info, you should read my colleague, Greg David's, feature.
Hey Amber, I am a huge Veronica Mars fan and would like to check out Party Down since I keep hearing great things and there are similar actors, but I can’t find it. Can you tell me if any Canadian stations currently show it or if I can find it online or on DVD anywhere? Thanks! —Jo
Amber: I’ve got a list of shows to watch and Party Down is one of them. Canadians with Super Channel subscriptions can watch the series there but be warned: Starz cancelled the show recently because of low ratings, so there are only two seasons. Additionally the first season is available on DVD. You can read my colleague Diana’s review here.
Hi Amber, is NBC cancelling 100 Questions? I love that show; it kind of reminds me of Friends. —Dorothy
Amber: I feel like the question here should be why hasn’t NBC already cancelled 100 Questions. You might like it, but the July 1 season finale only drew 1.89 million viewers. Everyone likes Friends, but everyone is trying to repeat that success. There are half a dozen new series airing this fall and midseason that feature the same concept. So far, my recommendation goes to Fox’s Mixed Signals.
Hi Amber, I’m sure you’ve been asked this many times but I just found you! Will there ever be a second season of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? —Anonymous
Amber: Unfortunately the second season is a no-go. The show's director and co-adaptor, Anthony Minghella, passed away before another season could be developed. Originally HBO promised it was looking into solutions to bring a sophomore edition to fruition, but since then, the network has taken a pass.
Hi Amber, NBC and CTV carried Merlin last summer. Will we be getting Season 2 this summer? —Mickey
Amber: Nope, we’ll be getting it in the fall. And not on CTV, but on Space, which is currently broadcasting repeats of the first season.
Hi Amber, I have a question about a few old series that I’m hoping will come on DVD. I’m looking for Eight is Enough and any more seasons of One Day at a Time? Cheers. —Terry
Amber: Sorry Terry, as it stands only the first season of One Day at a Time is out. There are no plans for future releases, nor any for Eight is Enough. And neither show is scheduled to air on cable stations.
Hi Amber, I have been wondering what happened to the series Life, which stopped suddenly a couple of years ago (Global and NBC, I think). It was shuffled around different days in its second year which made it extremely frustrating to watch — almost like they were trying to lose viewers. I apologize if this was asked and answered already and I missed it. Any chance it is coming back? —Jim
Amber: It was asked but I forgive you if you promise to continue reading from now on. First timer. Anyhow, you nailed it in your question — NBC shuffled Life around so much and so often that the promising viewer base it started with quickly dissipated and eventually tuned out. So many were upset by the show’s cancellation, but what can I say? It’s NBC — the network makes notoriously bad decisions every day.
Hey Amber! I’ve been following Pretty Little Liars on MuchMusic and it’s great. I was just wondering how many episodes the first season is set to have? And will all questions be answered by the end, or will there be a second season? Thanks! —Natalie
Amber: Not to be all OMG or WTF but I heart that series, too. It’s my guilty pleasure summer show, even though it’s so damned cheesy. Anyhow, ABC Family’s original order was for 10 episodes, but when the network saw the show was catching on like crazy, it ordered an additional 12. MuchMusic will air all 22 episodes as well. As they should — Pretty Little Liars is the Canadian specialty station’s biggest breakout hit in the past five years.
Hi Amber, any idea if Showcase will pick up Season 6 of Rescue Me later this year? —Fred
Amber: Definitely — the Canadian premiere is Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 10 p.m. ET. If you haven’t heard, enjoy it while it lasts: the show ends in 2011.
I would like to know if Mad Men will be telecast on other stations other than AMC? It’s a great cast and has storylines and I’d hate to miss it this year. Thanks. —Judy
Amber: Mad Men is an AMC production so that’s where it will air. The good news is that the station is available on Bell now, too. Last season that wasn’t the case and only Rogers subscribers could watch. If it’s a case of not wanting to subscribe to AMC with your current provider, you’ll simply have to wait for the DVDs or find it online.
That’s all for this week!

A TV junkie, Amber will watch just about anything – once. One of her biggest pet peeves is when networks bounce shows around their schedule, leading to an eventual cancellation. While current gems include The Big Bang Theory, The Office, Dexter, True Blood, House, Lost and The Mentalist, she’s still crying over the cancellations of Kitchen Confidential and Pushing Daisies.
Now Amber devotes her time to analyzing the current state of TV and helping readers dissect complicated schedules. She’ll answer a variety of questions about past and present shows, spoilers and casting: anything is — and should be, up for discussion.
